In shortNorth Bengal is three trips in one: Darjeeling hills, Kalimpong ridges and the Dooars, each with its own best month.

Researched from 4 sources across 3 websites · checked 4 Oct 2026Kalimpong DistrictDarjeeling DistrictMillennium Post

You arrive at NJP or Bagdogra, pass through Siliguri, and then the journey quickly splits into very different directions.

Darjeeling, Chatakpur and Sittong bring tea country and Kanchenjunga-facing villages. Kalimpong, Lava and Rishop are quieter, with forests, monasteries and ridge stays. The Dooars changes the scene again with Gorumara, Jaldapara, Samsing and Buxa.

So, what are the best places to visit in North Bengal? The answer depends as much on your month as your destination.

Choose well, and a few days can feel complete. Choose badly, and you may spend more time driving than travelling.

The Three Zones of North Bengal and How to Choose

North Bengal starts making more sense once you stop treating it as one broad destination. The hills around Darjeeling, the ridges around Kalimpong and the Dooars plains all offer different trips, even though they share the same gateway through Siliguri, NJP and Bagdogra.

Darjeeling Hills

For many first-time visitors, this is the easiest zone to understand because Darjeeling town acts as the obvious anchor. But the wider hills are much more varied than the town itself.

Tea estates, DHR heritage, high viewpoints and Kanchenjunga-facing villages all sit within the same broader region, which means you can combine a recognised hill station with a quieter stay nearby.

If central Darjeeling feels too crowded, that does not rule out the rest of the area. Chatakpur, Dawaipani, Takdah, Tinchuley, Sittong and Lepchajagat offer a slower pace while keeping you close to the character of the Darjeeling hills.

  • Best for: First-time North Bengal visitors, tea country, mountain views and travellers who want both town and village experiences
  • Minimum time: Around 3 nights for Darjeeling alone
  • Better with more time: 4 to 5 nights if you want to add one or two village areas

Main trade-off

Darjeeling gives you more sights and easier access, while the villages give you more quiet and fewer formal attractions.

Kalimpong Ridges

Kalimpong deserves to be treated as a different style of hill trip rather than a quieter replacement for Darjeeling. The appeal is less about ticking off major attractions and more about moving through ridge roads, monasteries, nurseries, forests and smaller settlements.

That makes the zone better suited to travellers who enjoy slower days and do not need a crowded sightseeing schedule. Kalimpong town can work as a base, while Lava, Rishop, Kolakham and nearby villages add forest stays, birding and a more rural feel.

  • Best for: Couples, small groups, repeat hill travellers and people who prefer slower travel
  • Minimum time: Around 3 nights for a focused trip
  • Better with more time: 4 to 5 nights for Kalimpong plus Lava, Rishop, Kolakham or nearby ridge villages
  • Best seasons: Spring and autumn are generally the stronger periods for outdoor travel in the district

Main trade-off

You get more quiet and village time, but fewer big town attractions than Darjeeling.

Dooars Plains

The Dooars changes the trip completely. Once you leave the hill routes behind, the focus moves to forests, grasslands, tea estates, rivers and wildlife zones such as Gorumara, Jaldapara and Buxa.

It also suits travellers who do not want a high altitude stay. Families, birders and wildlife-focused travellers often find the lower foothills easier to manage, especially in winter. The region is broad, though, so trying to cover both western and eastern Dooars too quickly can turn into a lot of road time.

  • Best for: Wildlife trips, birding, families and travellers who prefer forests and rivers over hill towns
  • Minimum time: Around 3 nights for one cluster
  • Better with more time: Add extra nights if you want to combine western and eastern Dooars
  • Best months: November to February, with March and early April also useful

Main trade-off

Safari access and forest movement depend on the seasonal forest calendar, so monsoon timing matters more here than in the hill zones.

03 · The places

Best Places to Visit in North Bengal

1. Darjeeling

Darjeeling is the obvious choice when you want one base with enough variety to fill several days. At around 2,050 m, you have the DHR, Chowrasta, tea estates, HMI, the zoo and a much broader choice of restaurants and accommodation than anywhere in the surrounding villages.

NJP is about 88 km away, and the drive commonly takes around 3 to 4 hours depending on traffic and the approach road.

2 to 3 nights is usually enough. October and November suit travellers hoping for clearer post-monsoon conditions, while March and April bring spring weather.

What Darjeeling gives you is convenience. You can spend the day sightseeing, return to town for dinner and still have options after dark. The tradeoff appears during busy periods, when traffic and crowds build quickly around central areas and popular viewpoints.

2. Kalimpong

Kalimpong deserves more than a rushed stop at Deolo.

The town sits at about 1,250 m, while Deolo rises much higher at 1,704 m, which already explains why the climate and views can vary noticeably within a short distance. Nurseries, monasteries and local markets fill the town itself, and the road network makes Kalimpong a practical overnight base before continuing towards Lava, Rishop or other eastern settlements.

NJP is about 75 km away, with the district administration giving a road time of roughly three hours.

One night works if you are passing through. Two makes more sense if you want time in town before heading farther east. March to April and October to November are the district’s strongest seasons for outdoor travel.

3. Kurseong

Kurseong makes sense when the tea landscape matters more than having a long sightseeing list.

It sits between the plains and Darjeeling at roughly 1,500 m, close enough to the main hill route that many travellers pass through without stopping. Staying overnight gives you time for tea estate visits, railway heritage and lower hill walks without carrying the pace of Darjeeling into the rest of the trip.

From NJP, expect roughly 40 to 45 km by road and around 1.5 to 2 hours under normal conditions.

One night is enough for a break in the journey. Two suits travellers booking a tea estate stay or deliberately keeping the schedule light. March to April and October to November are the easier periods to plan around.

4. Mirik

Mirik suits a trip that does not need to climb as high or pack the day with attractions.

The town sits around Sumendu Lake, with tea gardens and lower hill scenery extending beyond it. West Bengal Tourism lists Mirik at 1,767 m and notes the lake as its central attraction, with a 3.5 km road circling the water.

From NJP, the drive is roughly 55 to 60 km and usually takes about 2 to 2.5 hours depending on the route. Its position on the western side also makes it easy to combine with the approach towards Darjeeling.

A single night is enough for the lake and surrounding tea country. Two nights suit a slower break. October to November and March to April are the safer windows for planning.

Mirik is a weaker choice if your priority is a remote homestay or higher mountain scenery. It works better as a gentle hill stop, particularly when you do not want every day of the itinerary to involve long drives.

5. Offbeat Places in North Bengal: Darjeeling Hill Villages

01

Sittong

Sittong is closely tied to its orange orchards, but the fruit is seasonal rather than a year-round feature. November to January is the stronger period if oranges are the main draw. Outside that window, the village still suits homestays, walks and slower stays near Latpanchar.

Read the Offbeat Peak Sittong guide for the full route and stay details.

Stay: 1 to 2 nights · Best for: orchards, village walks and homestays

02

Tinchuley

Tinchuley works well for travellers who want ridge views without moving too far from the Takdah and Lamahatta circuit. Homestays and short local walks are the main reason to stay rather than rush through.

Read the Offbeat Peak Tinchuley guide for a deeper trip plan.

Stay: 1 to 2 nights · Best months: October to December and spring · Pair with: Takdah and Lamahatta

03

Lamahatta

Lamahatta is easiest to include when your route already passes through this side of the hills. The Eco Park, prayer flag garden and forest trail towards the sacred ponds give the stop enough structure without needing a long stay.

See the Offbeat Peak Lamahatta guide for the full route and stay details.

As a stop: half a day works · Overnight: 1 night if you want a slower forest stay

04

Takdah

Takdah is more about tea estates, old cantonment roads and heritage character than formal sightseeing. The quieter roads and slower pace make it a natural match with nearby Tinchuley and Lamahatta.

The Offbeat Peak Takdah guide goes into the cantonment history, routes and stays in more detail.

Stay: 1 to 2 nights · Best for: tea country and heritage surroundings · Pair with: Tinchuley and Lamahatta

05

Lepchajagat

Lepchajagat is a forest stay first. Clear weather can bring Kanchenjunga views, but the main appeal is silence, pine and oak forest, and the feeling of being away from town while still staying close enough to combine with Darjeeling.

Read the Offbeat Peak Lepchajagat guide before deciding between a forest stay here and a village stay farther east.

Stay: 1 to 2 nights · Best for: quiet forest time · Keep in mind: amenities are limited

06

Chatakpur

Chatakpur sits around 2,400 m inside the Senchal landscape, where sunrise, forest walks and Kanchenjunga views shape the stay. Village facilities are limited, so it suits travellers who are comfortable with a quiet homestay rather than a packed itinerary.

The Offbeat Peak Chatakpur guide covers access, stays and the forest entry details.

Stay: 1 to 2 nights · Best for: sunrise, forest and mountain views

07

Dawaipani

Dawaipani suits travellers who want the Darjeeling landscape without staying in the town itself. Clear mornings can bring strong Kanchenjunga views, while the village remains quiet with only limited shops and activities.

See the Offbeat Peak Dawaipani guide for the detailed village plan.

Stay: 1 to 2 nights · Best for: ridge views and a slower village stay · Good alternative to: central Darjeeling

08

Latpanchar

Latpanchar is better suited to birders and slow travellers than general sightseeing visitors. Its forest setting near Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary, village stays and hornbill interest give it a clear nature focus.

If Latpanchar is part of a Sittong trip, the two can be combined without adding another long transfer because they sit within the same broader eastern hill circuit.

Read the Offbeat Peak Latpanchar guide for the full route and stay details.

Stay: 1 to 2 nights · Best for: birding, forest walks and photography · Plan around: early morning birding rather than sightseeing stops

09

21

Lolegaon

Lolegaon is a quiet Lepcha forest village near Kalimpong, best for Jhandi Dara sunrise; the canopy bridge is shut.

Read the Offbeat Peak Lolegaon guide for the full route and stay details. The Lolegaon canopy walk status check covers whether the hanging bridge is open.

Stay: Forest lodge, small hotels · Best time: Oct to Nov, Mar to May

6. Kalimpong Ridge Places to Visit

01

Lava

Lava sits much higher than Kalimpong town and feels cooler, wetter and more forested. The monastery, birding trails and access towards Neora Valley are stronger reasons to stay than distant mountain views, because mist and cloud are common here.

Stay: 1 to 2 nights · Best for: forest walks, birding and monastery visits · Good months: October to November and March to May

02

Rishop

Rishop is the quieter ridge stay in this cluster. Clear mornings can bring broad Himalayan views, while homestays and short walks make up most of the day.

Unlike Lava, there is little town activity here.

Stay: 1 to 2 nights · Choose it for: mountain views and quiet homestays · Keep in mind: shops, restaurants and evening options are limited

03

Kolakham

Kolakham sits close to the forest edge near Neora Valley, with nature rather than sightseeing driving the stay. Changey Falls and the surrounding forest roads give you enough for a slow day, but travel takes time on the narrower approach roads.

Stay: 1 to 2 nights · Best for: forest scenery, waterfalls and quiet village time · Expect: simple facilities and slower transfers

04

Delo

Deolo Hill sits above Kalimpong and gives you one of the easiest panoramic stops in the area. Because it is only a short drive from town, there is usually little reason to treat it as a separate overnight destination. The district tourism site lists it among Kalimpong’s principal viewpoints.

Allow: a few hours · Pair with: Kalimpong local sightseeing · Best for: views without adding another hotel change

05

Neora Valley

Neora Valley National Park is about forest and biodiversity, not simply another stay near Lava. The park protects dense Eastern Himalayan forest with rich birdlife and red panda habitat, although wildlife sightings can never be assumed.

Best for: birding, forest travel and nature-focused trips · Before going: confirm current access, guide requirements and permitted routes · Do not expect: guaranteed wildlife sightings

7. Dooars Tourist Places

01

Gorumara

Gorumara combines sal forest, grassland and river country in the western Dooars. Lataguri is the usual gateway, making it one of the easiest wildlife stops for a first Dooars trip. West Bengal Tourism identifies safaris and watchtowers as key ways to experience the park.

Stay: 2 nights · Best for: first Dooars wildlife trip · Check first: current safari availability and forest access

02

Jaldapara

Jaldapara feels more open than Gorumara, with extensive grassland, riverine forest and tall grass habitat. One-horned rhinos are an important conservation focus here, but seeing one is never guaranteed. Madarihat is the practical entry point for visitors.

Stay: 2 nights · Best for: travellers planning specifically around wildlife · Base: Madarihat

03

Buxa

Buxa sits much farther east, so adding it to a Lataguri-based trip needs extra time rather than a rushed day excursion. Forest, old routes and the walk towards Buxa Fort give the area a different character from safari-centred Gorumara and Jaldapara.

Stay: 2 nights or more · Best for: forest walks, history and eastern Dooars · Plan carefully: western and eastern Dooars are not close together

04

Samsing

Samsing is better for travellers who want foothill scenery without building the trip around a safari. Tea gardens, forested slopes and river country shape the area, with Suntaleykhola, Rocky Island and Chalsa fitting naturally into nearby routes.

Stay: 1 to 2 nights · Best for: scenery, tea country and slower nature stays · Pair with: Suntaleykhola, Rocky Island or Chalsa

05

Jhalong

Jhalong sits beside the Jaldhaka River close to the Bhutan foothills, so the appeal is largely the drive, river scenery and quieter eastern landscape. It takes more road time than central Dooars stops and makes more sense when paired with Bindu than as a standalone wildlife base.

Stay: 1 night if taking the route slowly · Best for: river scenery and road trips · Pair with: Bindu

06 · Getting there

How to Reach North Bengal

NJP, Bagdogra and Siliguri form the main gateway for most North Bengal trips. NJP has direct rail connections with Kolkata, Delhi, Guwahati and other major cities, while Bagdogra is the principal airport for the region. From either point, you continue by reserved car, shared vehicle or, on selected routes, bus.

From Siliguri, the Routes Split

Darjeeling hills

Via Rohini, Kurseong or another operating hill approach towards Darjeeling and nearby villages. Darjeeling district lists four principal road options from Siliguri.

Kalimpong ridges

Via Sevoke and the Teesta corridor towards Kalimpong, then onward to Lava and the eastern ridges.

Western Dooars

Via Sevoke towards Mal, Chalsa, Lataguri and Samsing.

Eastern Dooars

Continue towards Madarihat, Jaldapara, Hasimara, Buxa and Alipurduar.

Heads up

A late Bagdogra arrival is worth treating cautiously if your final stop is a remote village. Staying in Siliguri can be more practical than beginning a long hill transfer after dark.

Typical First Leg Car Fares

RouteReserved car approx.Travel time
NJP to Darjeeling₹2,500 to ₹3,8003 to 4 hrs
NJP to Kalimpong₹2,500 to ₹3,7002.5 to 3 hrs
NJP to Lataguri₹1,800 to ₹3,2001.5 to 2.5 hrs
NJP to Lava₹3,000 to ₹3,500Around 4 hrs
NJP to Jaldapara₹4,000 to ₹4,5003.5 to 4 hrs

These are current 2026 indicative fares and can change by vehicle type and season.

In North Bengal, plan by driving time and terrain, not kilometres alone.

07 · How long

How Many Days Do You Need for North Bengal?

For most trips, 3 nights is the minimum for one zone. If you want to combine hills and Dooars without spending half the trip in a car, 7 to 10 nights is far more realistic.

If You Have 3 Nights

Pick one area and stay with it.

  • Darjeeling with one nearby village
  • Kalimpong with one ridge stay
  • Gorumara with Murti or Chalsa

Trying to squeeze Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Dooars into three nights usually means more transfers than travel.

If You Have 5 Nights

You have enough time to combine nearby clusters without rushing.

  • Darjeeling with Takdah, Tinchuley or Lamahatta
  • Kalimpong with Lava, Rishop or Kolakham
  • Gorumara with another western Dooars stop

Jaldapara can be added, but only if you are comfortable with a longer inter-base drive.

If You Have 7 Nights

Two broader regions become comfortable. Darjeeling with Kalimpong, or either hill zone with Dooars, works much better than trying to touch all three.

If You Have 9 to 10 Nights

This is the point where a three-zone North Bengal trip starts to feel balanced rather than compressed.

A practical first trip could run Darjeeling for two nights, one village stay for two, Kalimpong for two, then western Dooars for two nights before returning to NJP or Bagdogra.

If you prefer smaller places over Darjeeling town, swap the first leg for Sittong and Latpanchar, then continue towards Lava or Kolakham before dropping into western Dooars.

08 · What to skip

What to Skip in North Bengal, and When

North Bengal is forgiving if you travel slowly, but it becomes much less enjoyable when the season, route and number of stops work against you. A few planning mistakes show up again and again, especially on short trips.

Keep these in mind before locking the route:

  • Do not build a view-dependent hill trip around peak monsoon. Kanchenjunga can disappear behind clouds for days, heavy rain can slow hill roads, and landslides or repair work may alter transfers. Monsoon is not automatically a bad time, though. Repeat travellers who want rain, quiet homestays and fewer people may still enjoy it.
  • Do not plan a Dooars safari during the annual forest closure. Protected forest tourism usually faces monsoon restrictions from around mid-June to mid-September. Exact dates change, so check the current year before booking.
  • Do not assume reopening day means ideal safari conditions. Wet tracks, dense vegetation and early season operational changes can affect the first weeks after reopening. Late October onward is usually easier for a first wildlife trip.
  • Think twice before choosing Darjeeling during major holiday rushes. Puja and other peak periods bring heavier traffic, tighter room availability, greater taxi demand, and crowded viewpoints. You can still visit, but expect a busier town and less flexibility.
  • Do not add Buxa to a short Gorumara weekend. Western and eastern Dooars are far enough apart to need proper transfer time. On a short trip, choosing one cluster usually works better.
  • Do not change homestays every night. Repacking, check-in, check-out, and repeated road transfers quickly eat into the time you came to spend in the village.

A North Bengal itinerary usually gets better when you remove one stop rather than add another.

10 · The questions

FAQs

What are the best places to visit in North Bengal?

Darjeeling, Chatakpur, Sittong and Tinchuley suit hill and village stays. Kalimpong, Lava and Rishop work better for ridge travel, while Gorumara, Jaldapara and Buxa are stronger choices for forests and wildlife. The best option depends on your month, trip length and travel style.

What is the best time to visit North Bengal?

November is one of the easiest months for combining the hills with Dooars. March and April are particularly good for spring travel around Darjeeling and Kalimpong. Monsoon months need more caution because cloud, road disruption and forest restrictions can affect both hill and wildlife itineraries.

How many days are enough for North Bengal?

Plan about 3 nights for one zone, 5 to 7 nights for a deeper trip or two regions, and around 9 to 10 nights if you want to include Darjeeling hills, Kalimpong ridges and Dooars without rushing between bases.

Which is better, Darjeeling, Kalimpong or Dooars?

They suit different trips. Darjeeling works well for heritage, tea estates and a classic hill town stay. Kalimpong suits quieter ridge routes, monasteries and smaller settlements. Dooars is better for forests, wildlife and lower altitude travel. Your priorities matter more than a fixed ranking.

Can I cover Darjeeling and Dooars in the same trip?

Yes, but allow enough time for the transfer and for each region to feel distinct. Darjeeling and Dooars differ sharply in altitude, landscape and road character. A week or longer is a more comfortable starting point than trying to add Dooars as a quick extension.

Can I visit North Bengal without hiring a private car?

Yes, especially between major towns. Shared taxis and local transport cover several common routes from Siliguri and NJP. Remote village connections are less predictable and may involve changes or limited departures, so a reserved car becomes more useful when your itinerary includes several smaller stops.
