How we’ll cover permits, roads and weather windows
A short note on what this newsroom is for, what we will publish here, and the one rule we are giving ourselves about official rules.
By the Offbeat Peak deskDarjeelingwritten on the road
This page exists because things change on the ground faster than a guide can be rewritten. Permits get tightened, a road closes for a season, a pass opens three weeks late. Those updates do not belong buried in a guide you read six months ago.
What we will publish here
- New guides and villages as they go live
- Changes to how we cover a region
- Seasonal notes — when a window opens or closes, from people who were there
The rule we are giving ourselves
We will not publish a permit rule, a fare, or a road status here unless we can point at where it came from. Travel writing is full of confidently wrong specifics that get copied for years, and permits are exactly the kind of detail people get stranded by.
If we cannot source it, we will say we cannot source it — and tell you who to call instead.
So for anything official
- Check the issuing office or district administration before you travel
- Treat any date or fee you read anywhere — here included — as a starting point, not a guarantee
- If something in our guides has gone stale, tell us: contact us
