Sethan and Naggar join the Himachal collection

Two very different Kullu valley bases — a snow-line hamlet above Manali and a castle village with a Russian painter’s house — are now full guides.

Sethan, above Manali on the Hamta side

Two Kullu valley bases are now full guides. They are half an hour apart on the map and nothing alike on the ground.

Sethan

Sethan sits above Manali on the Hamta side, a Buddhist Sherpa hamlet that gets snow when Manali gets rain. In winter it is igloo-stay country. In summer it is the trailhead for Hamta Pass and a place to sit out the Old Manali crowds.

Naggar

Naggar is the older story — a castle built in stone and deodar, the Roerich estate on the slope above it, and apple orchards running down to the Beas. It is the quieter half of the Kullu valley and the better base if you want to walk between villages rather than drive.

One is snow and silence. The other is stone, apples and a hundred-year-old painter’s house. Both are twenty minutes off the road everyone else is on.

Choosing between them

  • Snow, trekking, an igloo night — Sethan, December to March
  • Architecture, orchards, slow walking — Naggar, April to June or September to November
  • Both work as a two-night add-on to a Manali trip

Both sit under the Himachal Pradesh hub.
