Seven North Bengal village guides are now live

Chatakpur, Dawaipani, Lamahatta, Takdah, Tinchuley, Latpanchar and Sittong — each written after staying there, with homestay numbers that actually pick up.

Upper Sittong, one of the seven villages now covered

Seven village guides for the Darjeeling hills are now published. Between them they cover the ridge villages most people drive past on the way to somewhere busier — and the ones we kept going back to.

What is in each guide

Every one is built the same way: how to get there from Bagdogra, NJP or Darjeeling town; where to stay with real homestay contacts; what a day there actually looks like; and the month-by-month view of when the place is at its best and when it is fogged in.

  • Chatakpur — a forest village inside Senchal sanctuary, eleven homestays and no shops
  • Dawaipani — the balcony view of Darjeeling town lighting up after dusk
  • Lamahatta — pine slopes, prayer flags and the easiest first-timer base
  • Takdah — colonial bungalows in a working tea estate
  • Tinchuley — orange orchards and the Rangeet valley below
  • Sittong — orange season runs November into January
We did not write a single one of these from a desk. Each guide is a place someone on the team slept in, ate in, and came back to.

Why villages, not towns

Darjeeling town is well covered by everyone. The villages an hour out are not, and that gap is where most of the good travel is. A homestay in Chatakpur costs a fraction of a hill-station hotel and puts you inside a forest instead of beside a car park.

If you are planning a trip

  • Pick two villages, not five — the roads are slow and the point is to stay put
  • October to early December is the clearest stretch for Kanchenjunga
  • Book homestays directly; most of the numbers in our guides are the family, not an agent

All seven sit under the North Bengal hub, alongside the Darjeeling town guides.
